About Triumph

After the original Triumph Engineering fell into receivership in 1983, John Bloor founded Triumph Motorcycles Ltd, the largest UK-owned motorcycle manufacturer. The new firm, originally known as Bonneville Coventry Ltd, carried on Triumph’s motorcycle manufacturing tradition that began in 1902. Thailand is home to several of its most important industrial plants.

Triumph sold 63,400 motorcycles in the year leading up to June 2017. When Triumph Engineering went into receivership in 1983, the Official Receiver sold the name and production rights to John Bloor. Bloor opted against relaunching Triumph right away because the new company’s manufacturing plant was obsolete and unable to compete with Japanese manufacturers’ technology.

To bridge the gap between the closure of the old firm and the start of the new, Les Harris of Racing Spares in Newton Abbot, Devon, resumed production of the old Bonneville under license. During a five-year period beginning in 1983, around 14 were built every week at peak production. The Harris Bonnevilles were never imported into the United States because of issues with liability insurance.

Bloor got to work putting together the fledgling Triumph company, enlisting several of the company’s former designers to start developing new models. After seeing the facilities of its competitors in Japan, the team opted to embrace Japanese production practices, particularly new-generation computer-controlled machinery. Triumph obtained its first set of equipment in 1985 to begin development on its new prototype models in secret. The business has finished its first engine by 1987.

Bloor funded the construction of a new factory on a 10-acre (40,000-square-meter) property in Hinckley, Leicestershire, in 1988. Hinckley Triumphs were initially made in 1991 for the model year. Between buying the brand and breaking even in 2000, Bloor invested between £70 million and £100 million in the firm.

Bloor built a new network of export wholesalers at the same time as production capacity grew. Triumph Deutschland GmbH and Triumph France SA were two of his earlier subsidiaries. Bloor founded Triumph Motorcycles America Ltd. in 1994.

Half of the main factory, including the assembly area and stores, was destroyed by a fire that started at the back of the site at 21:00 on March 15, 2002, as the firm was prepared to commemorate its 100th anniversary as a motorcycle manufacturer. At the height of the conflagration, nearly 100 firefighters were battling the blaze using 30 trucks. Despite this, the company, which employed over 650 people at the time, quickly rebuilt the facility and resumed production by September of that year.

Triumph started building a new sub-assembly manufacturing facility in Chonburi, Thailand, in May 2002 to produce various components. In 2006, Prince Andrew, Duke of York opened a second plant, which includes a wet painting facility and an assembly line. In 2007, a third facility with high-pressure die-casting and machining was opened, and Triumph stated plans to boost production to over 130,000 motorcycles.

Triumph Motorcycles (Thailand) Limited is a wholly-owned British company that today employs over 1000 people. In early 2011, John Bloor’s son, Nick Bloor, took over as CEO of Triumph Motorcycles from Tue Mantoni, and in 2017, Triumph built a new £4 million visitor center, which includes a collection of Triumph motorcycles, memorabilia, and a factory tour.
