About Harley Davidson

Harley-Davidson, Inc., sometimes known as H-D or Harley, is an American motorcycle company based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, that was founded in 1903. It was one of only two major American motorcycle manufacturers to survive the Great Depression, along with India. The company has grown to become one of the world’s leading motorcycle manufacturers and an iconic brand known for its loyal following despite several ownership changes, subsidiary agreements, periods of poor economic health and product quality, and severe worldwide rivalry. Owner clubs and events can be found all over the world.

Harley-Davidson is known for customising motorcycles, which helped to birth the chopper motorbike style. The business has expanded its portfolio to include more current VRSC (2002) and middle-weight Street (2015) platforms, as well as heavyweight, air-cooled cruiser motorcycles with engine displacements of more than 700 ccs.

During the 1920s, Harley-Davidson made significant innovations, including a new 74 cubic inch (1,212.6 ccs) V-Twin engine in 1921 and the “teardrop” gas tank in 1925. In 1928, they introduced a front brake, but only on the J/JD types. Harley-Davidson debuted their 45-cubic-inch (737 ccs) flathead V-Twin in late summer 1929 to compete with the Indian 101 Scout and the Excelsior Super X. From 1929 to 1931, the “D” model was produced.

Harley-Davidson and sportbike producer Buell Motorcycle Company first collaborated in 1987, when Harley-Davidson provided Buell with fifty excess XR1000 engines. Buell continued to buy Harley-Davidson engines until 1993 when Harley-Davidson purchased a 49 percent stake in the Buell Motorcycle Company.  In 1998, Harley-Davidson increased its ownership of Buell to 98 percent, then to 100 percent in 2003.

Buell created a low-cost, low-maintenance motorcycle in order to entice beginners to motorcycles in general and Harley-Davidson in particular. The resulting single-cylinder Buell Blast was introduced in 2000 and produced until 2009 when Buell announced that it would be the last year of manufacture. From 2000 through May 2014, the Buell Blast served as the training vehicle for the Harley-Davidson Rider’s Edge New Rider Course.
