About Kawasaki

After purchasing a struggling motorcycle company, Meguro Manufacturing, with whom they had been in collaboration, Kawasaki Aircraft began producing motorcycles under the Meguro moniker. Kawasaki Motor Sales was formed as a result of this. On the fuel tank of some early motorcycles, there is a “Kawasaki Aircraft” emblem.

Kawasaki engineers were working on a four-stroke engine for tiny cars in 1962. The engineers were then sent to the Meguro plant to work on the Meguro K1 and SG, a single cylinder 250 cc OHV motorcycle. Kawasaki and Meguro combined in 1963 to create Kawasaki Motorcycle Co., Ltd. From 1962 to 1967, Kawasaki motorcycles had an emblem that looked like a flag within a wing.

Work on the Meguro K1, a 500cc vertical twin based on the BSA A7, and the Kawasaki W1 continued. The K2 was sent to the United States for testing in response to the growing demand for four-stroke motorcycles in the United States. It was initially dismissed because of a lack of power. Kawasaki began exporting a limited number of motorcycles in the mid-1960s. Kawasaki improved sales with the introduction of the H1 Mach III in 1968, as well as various enduro-style motorcycles to compete with Yamaha, Suzuki, and Honda.
