Soichiro Honda, the creator of Honda, was fascinated by autos throughout his life. He worked as a mechanic at Art Shokai’s garage, where he tuned vehicles and raced them. Honda created Tokai Seiki (Eastern Sea Precision Machine Company) in 1937 with funding from a friend, Kato Shishir, to build piston rings out of the Art Shokai garage.
Tokai Seiki obtained a contract to supply piston rings to Toyota after initial failures, however, the contract was lost due to the poor quality of their products. Honda was able to mass-produce piston rings acceptable to Toyota by 1941 after attending engineering school without graduating and visiting factories throughout Japan to better understand Toyota’s quality control systems known as the “five whys.”
The T360 compact pick-up truck, which went on sale in August 1963, was Honda’s first manufacturing vehicle. It was classified as a Kei automobile because it was powered by a modest 356cc straight-4 gasoline engine. The S500 sports vehicle, which followed the T360 into production in October 1963, was Honda’s first production car. Honda’s motorcycle roots were evident in the back wheels, which were chain-driven.
Honda worked hard over the next few decades to extend its product portfolio as well as its operations and exports to a variety of countries across the world. In an attempt to gain ground in the luxury automobile industry, Honda launched the successful Acura brand to the American market in 1986.
Honda and General Motors announced a North American collaboration in September 2020, with production set to begin in 2021. “The proposed agreement will entail sharing a variety of vehicles, to be sold under each company’s individual brands, as well as cooperation in purchasing, research and development, and linked services,” according to The Detroit Free Press.
Honda announced in March 2022 that it would form a joint venture with Sony to develop and manufacture electric vehicles. The latter will supply imaging, sensing, networking, and other technology, while Honda will be in charge of automobile manufacture. The venture is expected to completely debut in late 2022, with the first cars arriving in 2025.
