Ducati is a collection of firms based in Borgo Panigale, Bologna, Italy, that is best known for producing motorcycles. Cagiva accepted the offer from Texas Pacific Group in 1996.

Audi, a Volkswagen Group affiliate, announced its plan to purchase Ducati for €860 million (US$1.2 billion) in April 2012. Ferdinand Pich, the chairman of Volkswagen and a motorcycle enthusiast, had long desired Ducati and lamented passing on a chance to buy the business from the Italian government in 1984. Analysts questioned whether a small motorcycle manufacturer would have a significant impact on a corporation the scale of Volkswagen, stating that the deal has a “trophy feel” to it and is “motivated by VW’s enthusiasm for nameplates rather than industrial or financial rationality.”
