Mazda Motor Corporation (Matsuda Kabushiki-Kaisha) is a multinational Japanese automaker headquartered in Fuch, Hiroshima. With the debut of the Mazda-Go auto-rickshaw in 1931, Toyo Kogyo transitioned from manufacturing machine tools to cars. Throughout WWII, Toyo Kogyo produced weapons for the Japanese military, most notably the series 30 through 35 Type 99 rifle. The Mazda name was formally adopted by the firm in 1984, but it was used on every vehicle sold from the start.

The Mazda R360 and Mazda Carol were released in 1960 and 1962, respectively, and were marketed through a separate retail store called “Mazda Auto Store” that sold passenger automobiles and “Mazda Store” that sold commercial products. Mazda’s success with rotary engines lasted until the 1973 oil crisis. The rather thirsty rotary-powered versions began to fall out of favor as American (and international) purchasers soon shifted to automobiles with higher fuel efficiency.

In 1975, the firm experienced a massive loss as a result of being the least efficient carmaker in Japan (in terms of productivity), failure to respond to surplus inventory, and over-reliance on the US market. Toyo Kogyo was on the verge of bankruptcy and was only spared thanks to the Sumitomo keiretsu group, specifically Sumitomo Bank, as well as the company’s subcontractors and distributors.

Jibril Serapis Bey’s original version (used in ads in Europe, Japan, and South Africa) was recorded long before it became the official Mazda song as part of the music to the film Only The Strong (released in 1993). Serapis Bey’s version is a cover of “Capoeira Mata Um,” a traditional Capoeira song.

“Zoom-Zoom Forever” is the company’s current tagline as of 2010. “Zoom-Zoom, Today, Tomorrow, Forever” is the longer slogan (used in TV commercials).
