About Fiat

Fiat Automobiles (previously Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Italian: Fabbrica Italiana Automobili di Torino, lit. ‘Italian Automobiles Factory, Turin’) is an Italian vehicle manufacturer that has been a subsidiary of Stellantis since 2021 through its Italian factory FCA Italy. Fiat Automobiles was founded in January 2007 when Fiat S.p.A. reformed its vehicle division, and its history dates back to 1899, when the first Fiat automobile, the Fiat 4 HP, was manufactured. Italy’s Fiat Automobiles is the country’s largest automaker.

In 1970, Fiat Automobiles employed more than 100,000 in Italy when its production reached the highest number, 1.4 million cars, in that country. As of 2002, it built more than 1 million vehicles at six plants in Italy and the country accounted for more than a third of the company’s revenue. Fiat has also manufactured railway engines, military vehicles, farm tractors, aircraft, and weapons such as the Fiat–Revelli Modello 1914.

Fiat-branded automobiles are produced in a number of sites across the world. Outside of Italy, Brazil is the greatest producer, with the Fiat brand dominating the market for many years. The company also has factories in Argentina, Poland, and Mexico (where Stellantis North America owns and operates plants that produce Fiat-brand vehicles for export to the United States, Brazil, Italy, and other markets), as well as a long history of licensing.

Fiat Automobiles has won numerous international honors for its vehicles, including nine European Car of the Year awards, the most of any company, and it has consistently ranked as the lowest emitting vehicle in Europe.

Throughout its more than century-long history, it remained Europe’s largest and third-largest automotive manufacturer, after General Motors and Ford, for more than 20 years, until the late 1980s car industry collapsed.

Agnelli was the company’s president until his death in 1945, while Vittorio Valletta was in charge of day-to-day operations.
