About Lucid Motors
Lucid, formerly known as Atieva, was created in 2007 with the goal of producing electric vehicle batteries and powertrains for other automakers. Peter Rawlinson, Lucid’s CEO, previously worked at Tesla as VP of Engineering, and Vice President Derek Jenkins previously worked at Mazda North America Operations as Head of Design. Tsing Capital, Mitsui, Venrock, JAFCO, and others have invested in the company.
In October 2016, the business changed its name to Lucid Motors and declared its intention to produce an all-electric, high-performance Lucid Motors automobile.

On November 29, 2016, state and company officials announced the planned construction of Lucid’s US$700 million manufacturing plant in Casa Grande, Arizona, which was expected to employ up to 2,000 workers by the mid-2020s and produce 20,000 cars per year initially before expanding to 130,000 cars per year. The facility was to be built with a maximum capacity of 380,000 automobiles per year in mind.
The company had expected to break ground in 2017 and have automobiles in production by early 2019. As of November 2016, the company had planned to break ground in 2017. On September 28, 2021, the first automobiles rolled off the assembly line. Lucid Motors said on September 17, 2018, that they were in talks with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund for finance worth more than $1 billion.
In April of this year, the investment was finished. The money will go toward finalising the Lucid Air model’s engineering and testing, as well as the first phase of the company’s manufacturing factory in Casa Grande, Arizona, commercial production of the Lucid Air, and Lucid’s global retail strategy, which will start in North America. The first phase of the plant’s construction began in late 2019 and was finished in December 2020. The second phase of building is currently underway and will boost annual production capacity from 34,000 to 90,000 automobiles. The finished factory will have a combined manufacturing capacity of around 400,000 automobiles per year (four phases).
In December 2016, a prototype of the Lucid Air fully electric automobile was presented. Lucid Air’s production was set to begin in the spring of 2021. The Lucid Air Pure was revealed in November 2020, with a range of 406 miles (653 km), 480 horsepower (360 kW), and a starting price of US$77,400. The Lucid Air Touring, Grand Touring, and Dream Edition models are all available. The top-of-the-line cars have a power output of over 1,000 horsepower (750 kW).
The lucid started ground on a factory in Casa Grande, Arizona, the first greenfield EV manufacturing facility in the United States, in December 2019. Lucid finished plant construction, designated AMP-1, on December 1, 2020, with the goal of “ramping up to 400,000 electric automobiles per year.”
By spring 2021, the US$700 million plants were anticipated to start producing the Lucid Air. A total of 999,000 square feet are included in the first phase (92,800 m2). Construction on Phase 2 was set to begin in early 2021. The 500-acre (200 ha) parcel of land on which this facility is situated is owned by Pinal County, Arizona, which leases it to Lucid. Pinal County paid $29.94 million for the land, which was paid for by issuing bonds.
