About Buick

Buick is a branch of General Motors, an American automotive manufacturer (GM). It was one of the original American marques of automobiles, and it was the firm that founded General Motors in 1908. It was founded by automotive pioneer David Dunbar Buick. William C. Durant, the creator of General Motors, had previously worked as the general manager and significant investor for Buick.

Buick has been marketed as a premium automobile brand in North America for much of its existence, selling luxury vehicles that are positioned above GM’s mainstream models but below the flagship luxury Cadillac division. According to The Detroit News, Buick’s current target demographic is “a successful executive with a family.”

Chief engineer Walter Marr built the first two Buick automobiles in 1899 and 1900 at the “Buick Auto-Vim and Power Company,” but company owner David Dunbar Buick was hesitant to start making automobiles, preferring to focus on stationary and marine engine production, so Marr left Buick in 1901 to start his own automobile company under his own name.

Eugene Richard was his replacement, and in 1902 he submitted for a patent for Marr’s valve-in-head (overhead valve) engine, which was granted to Richard in the name of Buick in 1904. Richard built the third Buick automobile in 1903, but in 1904, Buick, now known as “Buick Motor Company,” relocated from Detroit to Flint, Michigan, and Richard stayed behind.

On May 19, 1903, in Detroit, Michigan, David Buick established the Buick Motor Company. Benjamin Briscoe, a friend, and fellow automotive enthusiast had financed Buick, which he sold to James H. Whiting (1842–1919), of Flint Wagon Works, in Flint, Michigan, in September 1903. Whiting relocated Buick to Flint, across the street from his business, with the intention of incorporating Buick engines into his wagons. David Buick was retained as a manager, while Walter Marr was rehired as head engineer.

The engine Buick and Marr created for this car was a 159 cubic inch two-cylinder valve-in-head engine with each cylinder horizontal and 180 degrees opposed to the other. Whiting manufactured only a few Model B cars in 1904 before running out of operational funds, forcing him to hire William C. Durant as a controlling investor that year. Durant constructed a few more Model Bs in 1904, then dramatically increased manufacturing of the Model C in 1905, spending the next four years establishing Buick into the most popular car brand in the United States.

Durant made his fortune in the 19th century as co-owner of the Durant-Dort Carriage Company, which by 1904 was the largest carriage-making company in the country and one of the largest in the world, alongside Josiah Dallas Dort. In 1905, Durant relocated the majority of Buick production to the former Durant-Dort Imperial Wheel facility in Jackson, Michigan.

Buick continued to make cars in Jackson until 1907 when Factory #1 in Flint was completed. Buick trucks were being manufactured at the Jackson facility until 1912.
