About Subaru

Subaru vehicles have typically attracted a small but loyal following in Western markets. The company’s marketing focuses on individuals who want the company’s characteristic engine and drive train, as well as all-wheel drive and off-road capability, and cheap sports car designs.

Subaru is the Japanese name for the Pleiades star cluster M45, also known as the “Seven Sisters,” which inspired the design and relates to the organizations that united to become FHI. Subaru cars are recognized for using a boxer engine architecture in most vehicles with displacements greater than 1500 cc. In 1972, the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive drive-train was introduced.

By 1996, both had become standard equipment in most markets for mid-size and smaller cars. The BRZ, which debuted in 2012 as a result of a partnership with Toyota and marries a boxer engine with rear-wheel drive, is the lone exception. The WRX, Legacy and Outback XT, Ascent, and originally the Legacy GT and Forester XT, are all turbocharged Subaru passenger cars.

In 1915, Chikuhei Nakajima founded Fuji Heavy Industries as the Aircraft Research Laboratory. The firm was renamed Nakajima Aircraft Company, Ltd in 1932, and it quickly rose to prominence as a significant aircraft producer for Japan during World War II. Nakajima Aircraft was reformed once more at the end of WWII, this time as Fuji Sangyo Co, Ltd. With wartime surplus aircraft parts, the business built the Fuji Rabbit, a motor scooter, in 1946.

According to the Japanese government’s anti-zaibatsu legislation, the Corporate Credit Rearrangement Act, Fuji Sangyo was separated into 12 smaller firms in 1950. Five of these firms, as well as a newly formed corporation, opted to unite to form Fuji Heavy Industries between 1953 and 1955.

At the time, Kenji Kita, the CEO of Fuji Heavy Industries, wanted the new business to be involved in automobile manufacture, therefore plans to build a car with the development code-name P-1 were quickly put in place. Kita polled the firm for ideas for naming the P1, but none of the suggestions were particularly intriguing. Finally, he gave the corporation the Japanese name Subaru, which is the Japanese name for the Pleiades star cluster, which he “had been cherishing in his heart.” The Subaru 1500 was the first Subaru vehicle.
