Sterling Heights Assembly in Sterling Heights, Michigan produces new series of Ram trucks. “Guts. Glory. Ram” has been the brand’s tagline since its debut. When Chrysler emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in June 2009, Fiat Group obtained a 20% share in Chrysler Group LLC, and Sergio Marchionne took over as CEO from Robert Nardelli.

On June 10 of that year, “New Chrysler,” established as Chrysler Group LLC, purchased nearly all of Chrysler’s assets. The federal government backed the deal with an $8 billion loan with a nearly 21% interest rate. “World Class Production,” or WCM, a method of meticulous manufacturing quality, was adopted under CEO Marchionne, and various goods were re-launched with quality and luxury. The divisions of Ram, Jeep, Dodge, SRT, and Chrysler were split up to focus on their own identities and brands.

Ram Trucks was founded as a Chrysler subsidiary in 2010, as a spin-off from Dodge, and uses the brand of the Dodge Ram pickup truck series, which is now offered under the Ram banner. According to Chrysler, the Ram Trucks brand will focus on “genuine truck customers,” as opposed to “casual truck buyers” who buy trucks for the sake of image or flair.

In North American markets, the Fiat Ducato cargo van design has been adopted and sold as the Ram ProMaster, filling the void left by Daimler’s discontinuation of the Dodge Sprinter in 2008. The goal was to boost truck sales “from today’s 280,000 to 415,000 by 2014,” according to the plan. Chrysler executives have expressed their aim to compete with Ram in the semi-trailer truck segment, a prospect supported by Fiat’s ownership of Iveco and a network of Dodge dealers already in place.

Former Ram Division President Fred Diaz claimed, “Ram trucks are promoted independently from Dodge vehicles.” “Dodge trucks are not Ram trucks. Ram will always be identified as a Ram by its VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). We need to keep marketing as Ram in order for Dodge to have a distinct brand identity: hip, cool, young, and active. That isn’t going to work for a truck-buying campaign. Both should have different themes.”

Reid Bigland, the CEO of Ram Trucks, has been chosen to oversee the Alfa Romeo brand in North America. Robert Hegbloom, a longstanding Chrysler employee who joined Chrysler in 1986 and was a director for Dodge, was named the new president of the Ram Trucks brand. Bigland was elevated to CEO of Ram Trucks in October 2018. He soon learned that the division had been underreporting sales and passed the information over to the US government for examination. FCA allegedly slashed his bonuses in retribution, prompting Bigland to file a whistleblower action against the company.
