About Porsche
Dr.-Ing. h.c. F. Dr.-Ing. h.c. F. Dr.-Ing. Porsche AG, commonly abbreviated as Porsche, is a German vehicle manufacturer based in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, that specializes in high-performance sports cars, SUVs, and sedans. Volkswagen AG owns the company, with Porsche Automobile Holding SE owning a majority interest. The 718 Boxster/Cayman, 911 (992), Panamera, Macan, Cayenne, and Taycan are among Porsche’s current models.
In 1931, Ferdinand Porsche established the “Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche GmbH” alongside Adolf Rosenberger and Anton Pich. The main offices were located in Kronenstraße 24 in Stuttgart’s city center. Initially, the firm provided motor vehicle development and consulting services, but it did not produce any vehicles under its own brand.

During WWII, Volkswagen focused its production on the Kübelwagen (52,000 produced) and Schwimmwagen (15,584 made) military versions of the Volkswagen Beetle. Porsche’s logo is based on the coat of arms of the Free People’s State of Württemberg, which existed from 1918 until 1933 in Weimar Germany and had Stuttgart as its capital. (From 1945 until 1952, the Bundesland of Württemberg-Hohenzollern used the same arms, while Stuttgart served as the capital of neighboring Württemberg-Baden.) Since the company’s headquarters were in Stuttgart, the arms of Stuttgart appear as an inescutcheon in the middle of the logo.
Because heraldic achievements never spell out the armiger’s name or home-town in the shield, the heraldic symbols paired with the texts “Porsche” and “Stuttgart” do not make a traditional coat of arms. Because Ferdinand Porsche designed the first Volkswagen Beetle, the company has always had a tight link with the Volkswagen (VW) marque, and later, the Volkswagen Group (which also owns Audi AG).
In 1969, the two firms teamed together to create the VW-Porsche 914 and 914-6, with the 914-6 featuring a Porsche engine and the 914 with a Volkswagen engine. In 1976, the Porsche 912E (the US only) and Porsche 924 were born, both of which incorporated many Audi components and were constructed at Audi’s Neckarsulm factory, which had previously been NSU’s.
There were also Porsche 944s made there[25], though with significantly fewer Volkswagen components. The Cayenne, which debuted in 2002, is constructed on the same chassis as the Volkswagen Touareg and the Audi Q7 at the Volkswagen Group’s Bratislava plant.
