About Mini
From 1959 to 2000, the British Motor Corporation (BMC) and its successors produced the Mini, a two-door tiny city automobile. The original Mini is regarded as a cultural symbol of 1960s Britain. It impacted a generation of automobile builders with its space-saving transverse engine and front-wheel drive architecture, which allowed 80 percent of the car’s floorpan to be used for cargo.
The Mini was named the second-most influential car of the twentieth century in 1999, after only the Ford Model T but ahead of the Citroen DS and Volkswagen Beetle. Other “supermini” designs, such as the Honda N360 (1967), Nissan Cherry (1970), and Fiat 127, were inspired by the Mini’s front-wheel-drive, transverse-engine configuration (1971). Larger subcompact designs were also adapted to the layout.
Sir Alec Issigonis created this unusual two-door automobile for BMC. It was built at BMC’s Longbridge plant in England, as well as the former Morris Motors plant at Cowley near Oxford, and the Victoria Park/Zetland British Motor Corporation (Australia) factory in Sydney, Australia, and later in Spain (Authi), Belgium, Italy (Innocenti), Chile, Malta, Portugal, South Africa, Uruguay, Venezuela, and Yugoslavia (IVM).
Lambrate, a district of Milan, created the Italian version of the Mini, which was sold under the Innocenti brand.
