About Dodge

Dodge is an American automaker based in Auburn Hills, Michigan, and a division of Stellaris. Dodge vehicles have traditionally included performance cars, and Dodge was Chrysler’s mid-priced brand above Plymouth for much of its life. Dodge was founded in the early 1900s as the Dodge Brothers Company machine shop by brothers Horace Elgin Dodge and John Francis Dodge as a supplier of parts and assemblies to Detroit-based automakers like Ford.

They started making entire autos under the “Dodge Brothers” brand in 1914, long before Chrysler Corporation was founded. From 1910 through January 1980, the Dodge main factory in Hamtramck, Michigan, was the Dodge main factory. In January 1920, John Dodge died of the Spanish flu, his lungs weakened by tubercle.

Throughout the 1970s, Dodge’s staple vehicles were trucks and full-size passenger cars, while it also produced compact cars like the 1963–76 Dart and midsize cars like the “B-Body” Coronet and Charger.
The 1973 oil embargo caused a drop in sales of American “gas guzzlers,” causing Chrysler to design the Dodge Aries K platform compact and midsize automobiles for the 1981 model year.

Chrysler’s business was revived in the 1980s thanks to the K platform and its derivatives. The Dodge Caravan is one example. The Dodge Stratus, as well as the larger Dodge Intrepid, found a lot of consumers in the 1990s. Dodge and its two sub-brands, Dodge Ram and Dodge Viper, were split off in 2011. Dodge declared that the Viper will be an SRT model, while Ram would be a separate brand.

SRT was incorporated back into Dodge in 2014. The Chrysler Group was renamed FCA US LLC later that year, corresponding with the merger of Fiat S.p.A. and the Chrysler Group into the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles corporate structure. Following that, on January 16, 2021, FCA and the PSA Group (Stellantis) merged again, creating the Dutch-based manufacturer Europe’s second-largest after Volkswagen.

Dodge Trucks

Dodge has been recognized for its passenger cars as well as its several truck models over the years, but after nearly a century of production, the decision was made to separate Dodge’s trucks under a separate Ram brand, based on the success of their top-selling truck, the Dodge Ram. Despite the fact that Ram trucks and Dodge vehicles are sold independently, Ram President Fred Diaz stated:

Dodge trucks will always be Ram trucks. The Dodge logo will always be present on the inside and exterior of the vehicle, and it will be ‘pinned’ (a term derived from the acronym VIN, or Vehicle Identification Number) as a Dodge. We need to keep marketing as Ram in order for Dodge to have a distinct brand identity: hip, cool, young, and active. That isn’t going to work for a truck-buying campaign. Both should have different themes.

Dodge has supplied light truck types since 1914 when they first started making their own cars. Initially, these were mostly based on existing passenger cars, but as the industry grew, they got their own chassis and body designs. Light- and medium-duty variants were first provided in the 1930s and 1940s, followed by a heavy-duty range.

The massive new Warren Truck Assembly facility, located just north of Detroit, debuted in 1938 and has been building Dodge vehicles ever since.
