About Chevrolet
Chevrolet, sometimes known as Chevy, and formally known as the Chevrolet Division of General Motors Company, is an American vehicle division of the American automaker General Motors (GM). The Chevrolet Motor Car Company was founded on November 3, 1911, by Louis Chevrolet and expelled General Motors founder William C. Durant. Durant moved back to the GM presidency by using the Chevrolet Motor Car Company to gain a majority interest in the company through a reverse merger on May 2, 1918.

Following Durant’s second ouster in 1919, Alfred Sloan chose the Chevrolet brand to become the volume leader in the GM family, producing mainstream vehicles to compete with Henry Ford’s Model T. Chevrolet automobiles are sold in almost every automotive market on the planet. Holden Special Vehicles represents Chevrolet in Oceania, having returned to the area after a 50-year absence in 2018 with the debut of the Camaro and Silverado pickup trucks (HSV was partially and formerly owned by GM subsidiary Holden, which GM retired in 2021).
Chevrolet was rebranded in Europe in 2005, with the tagline “Daewoo has grown up enough to become Chevrolet,” a move founded in GM’s attempt to develop a worldwide brand around Chevrolet. In late 1913, business co-founder William C. Durant unveiled the Chevrolet bowtie logo. According to an official business book titled The Chevrolet Story of 1961, Durant’s inspiration for the logo came from seeing the pattern marching off into infinity as a motif on wallpaper in a French hotel in 1908. He tore a piece of the wallpaper off and kept it to show his pals, thinking it would make a good automobile nameplate.
Catherine Durant, in an interview published in a 1986 issue of Chevrolet Pro Management Magazine, remembered how she and her husband were on vacation in Hot Springs, Virginia, in 1912. The Southern Compressed Coal Company advertised “Coalettes,” a refined fuel product for fires, in a November 12, 1911, edition of the Atlanta Constitution newspaper, according to Ken Kaufmann, historian, and editor of The Chevrolet Review.
The Coalettes emblem, as seen in the ad, was shaped like a slanted bowtie, extremely similar to the shape that would later become synonymous with Chevrolet. The publication was published barely nine days after the Chevrolet Motor Company was founded. Another theory connects the design to a stylized version of the Swiss flag’s cross. On Christmas Day 1878, Louis Chevrolet was born to French parents in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Canton of Neuchâtel, Switzerland.
