About Cadillac
The Cadillac Motor Car Division is a premium vehicle design and manufacturing division of the American automaker General Motors Company (GM). The United States, Canada, and China are its main markets. Cadillac vehicles are sold in 34 other markets throughout the world. Cadillac vehicles are at the pinnacle of luxury in the United States. Cadillac is one of the world’s first automobile brands, ranking fourth in the United States behind Autocar Company (1897), Oldsmobile (1897), and Buick (1897). (1899). It was named after the founder of Detroit, Michigan, Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac. His coat of arms inspired the Cadillac crest. Cadillac had already established itself as one of America’s best luxury automobile manufacturers by the time General Motors purchased the company in 1909.

By successfully demonstrating the interchangeability of its component parts during a reliability test in 1908, Cadillac became the first American car to win the Royal Automobile Club of the United Kingdom’s Dewar Trophy; this produced the firm’s tagline “Standard of the World.” In 1912, it was awarded the trophy once more for putting electric starting and lighting into a manufacturing vehicle.
Cadillac sprung from the ashes of the Henry Ford Corporation. In March 1902, after a disagreement with his investors, Henry Ford and several of his major colleagues quit the company. In preparation for liquidating the company’s assets, Ford’s financial backers William Murphy and Lemuel Bowen had engineer Henry M. Leland of Leland & Faulconer Manufacturing Company analyze the plant and equipment.
Instead, Leland persuaded the couple to keep making cars using Leland’s tried-and-true single-cylinder engine. The Cadillac Automobile Company was founded on August 22, 1902, after the Henry Ford Company facility at Cass Street and Amsterdam Avenue was converted. It was named after Antoine Laumet de La Mothe, Sieur de Cadillac, a French explorer who built the city of Detroit in 1701.
The Runabout and Tonneau, Cadillac’s first autos, were finished in October 1902. They were two-seat horseless carriages with a single-cylinder engine producing 10 horsepower (7 kW). They were nearly identical to the Ford Model A of 1903. Many sources claim that the first automobile left the factory on October 17th; in the book Henry Leland—Master of Precision, the date is October 20th; and another trustworthy source claims that car number three left the factory on October 16th.
In January 1903, Cadillac debuted the new vehicles at the New York Auto Show, where they wowed the crowds and received over 2,000 definite orders. Precision manufacture, and thus reliability, were Cadillac’s main selling points; a Cadillac was simply a better-made vehicle than its competitors.
